University of Pennsylvania, Historic Preservation Thesis | 2005
The fort of El Cañuelo is a small outlying structure of the San Juan National Historic Site, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The fort was first built in 1608 and later rebuilt in 1841, remaining in use until 1898. In 1949 the San Juan historic fortifications became the property of the National Park Service. The thesis included the comprehensive research and documentation of the building’s past preservation approaches, building survey, conditions assessment and recommendations for stabilization and repairs. The thesis proposed a preservation plan for the fort in four phases including emergency intervention, study and evaluation, partial implementation of the masonry conservation program, and the application of site management plan and interpretation. General guidelines for exterior masonry work at the fort were provided as part of the recommendations.
