The San José Church is the oldest and one of the largest churches in Puerto Rico. The church was built in several phases dating from 1532 to 1641. In 2004 stabilization work at the San José Church commenced with work at the Chapel of Christ of Ponce. During the first phase of the project the main objective was to undertake the emergency stabilization of the mural paintings on the north wall due to an imminent risk of collapse. The project consisted of a graphic conditions survey of the upper walls and ceiling, followed by stabilization treatment on the north wall. The goal of the treatment was to reattach the plaster to its support by the injection of grout. After stabilization was completed, the surfaces were cleaned and documented again. A complete report was produced to document existing conditions assessment, treatment and sample analysis and treatment results.
